Typing a row by hand

One transaction and no file: cash, a cheque, a refund you want to note today. How to type a row straight into the account tab, safely.

4 min Upload Workbook

Your workbook may look different. If there is no brown band of buttons along the top, use the Money Mastery menu in the menu bar above your workbook. The names are a little different there: Categorize is Categorize Transactions, Reports is Clarity AI & Reports, Dashboard is Open Dashboard, and Start Here is Getting Started.

Hi, and welcome. Sometimes you have one transaction and no file: cash, a cheque, a refund you want to note today. Today, typing a row straight into the account tab, safely.

In your workbook, click the tab for the account the money came from. Chase Checking, say.

Scroll down to the first empty row under your transactions..

The white cells are yours. Click the first and type the date, press Tab. Type the description, press Tab. Type the amount: money out is a negative number with a minus sign in front, money in is positive. Press Enter.

Do not type in the tinted cells further along the row; the workbook fills those .

Now click the Categorize button on the brown band. Your new row is in the list, waiting for a label like any other. Click Uncategorized at the top to see only the rows that need you; yours is there.

Click its label box, type a few letters, choose the label. It saves on its own, and the label goes back to the workbook within a minute.

If you typed a row by mistake, click each of the three cells you typed and press Delete, leaving the row empty. Never delete the row itself; the rows below it would move, and the workbook keys everything on the rows staying where they are.

The workbook still works like a workbook. Type when you have one row; upload when you have a month. Both land in the same place and Categorize reads both.

Categorize reads the account tab every time it opens, so a row you typed on your phone in the workbook is waiting with a label suggestion the next time you open the window on your computer.

Date, description, amount, in the white cells, below the last row. That is a typed transaction. See you in the next one.

The idea behind it

The workbook still works like a workbook. Type when you have one row; upload when you have a month. Both land in the same place and Categorize reads both.

Worth knowing

Categorize reads the account tab every time it opens, so a row you typed on your phone in the workbook is waiting with a label suggestion the next time you open the window on your computer.

Remember

Date, description, amount, in the white cells, below the last row. That is a typed transaction. See you in the next one.
