Twelve months side by side

The year draws itself from your labels: totals across the top, every month side by side, shares, and the exclude boxes for a one-off.

5 min Numbers Yearly

Your workbook may look different. If there is no brown band of buttons along the top, use the Money Mastery menu in the menu bar above your workbook. The names are a little different there: Categorize is Categorize Transactions, Reports is Clarity AI & Reports, Dashboard is Open Dashboard, and Start Here is Getting Started.

Welcome in. Today we zoom out to the Yearly Overview, where twelve months sit side by side and the pattern shows itself.

Click the Yearly Overview tab at the bottom of your workbook. Nobody typed this page; it draws itself from the labels you picked.

Across the top: total income for the year, total expenses, what is left..

Below, every month side by side. Each income label is a row, each expense group is a row, with a column for each month, January to December.

Read across a row. Groceries, January to December. A single high month is a blip. A number that climbs every month is a pattern.

Read down a column. One month's whole picture, income above, expenses below.

The small boxes next to some rows are the exclude boxes. Click one and a tick appears, and that label is set aside from the totals at the top, so you can ask what the year looks like without one big one-off, like the wedding. Click it again and it is back. It hides nothing anywhere else.

The share column at the right tells you what proportion of the year each group t.

Read the percentages as proportion, not size. The question is which groups actually mattered most this year, and whether a spike was one month or every month.

Tick the exclude box on your rent and the share column instantly shows what the rest of your spending looks like without it, which is the number most people have never seen.

If the year looks strange or too clean, the answer is in the inputs. Check the uploads and the labels. See you next time.

The idea behind it

Read the percentages as proportion, not size. The question is which groups actually mattered most this year, and whether a spike was one month or every month.

Worth knowing

Tick the exclude box on your rent and the share column instantly shows what the rest of your spending looks like without it, which is the number most people have never seen.

Remember

If the year looks strange or too clean, the answer is in the inputs. Check the uploads and the labels. See you next time.
