Name where the money goes

The Expense Labels tab is the list every report, chart and total is built from. Groups on the left, labels to the right, and only labels from this list on your rows.

6 min Labels Setup

Your workbook may look different. If there is no brown band of buttons along the top, use the Money Mastery menu in the menu bar above your workbook. The names are a little different there: Categorize is Categorize Transactions, Reports is Clarity AI & Reports, Dashboard is Open Dashboard, and Start Here is Getting Started.

Hi again. Today the expense labels, the list that every report, every chart and every total is built from.

Click the Expense Labels tab at the bottom of your workbook..

The groups run down the left: Home, Food, Transportation, Health, Fun, Giving, and so on. Each group has its labels in the cells to the right. Groceries and Dining under Food. Rent and Utilities under Home.

The groups are what the charts show. The labels are what you pick on a row. Keep the groups few; make the labels as specific as you need.

To add a label, click the first empty cell to the right of its group and type it. Vitamins under Health. Press Enter.

To rename a label, click it and type the new name over it. Every row that used the old name needs the new one too, so rename early in the year, not in December.

To remove a label, click the cell and press Delete. If rows still use it, label them something else first, or they drop out of your totals.

Click the Categorize button. Click a label box and open the list: the new label is in the dropdown, under its group.

A label that is not on this list sits in no total. If you ever type a label on a row that is one letter off the list, that row vanishes from every report. So add the label here first, then use it. The list is the truth.

The Categorize window will not let you type a label that is not on this tab; it offers the nearest one instead. That is how the list stays the truth.

Groups on the left, labels to the right, and only labels from this list on your rows. See you in the next one.

The idea behind it

A label that is not on this list sits in no total. If you ever type a label on a row that is one letter off the list, that row vanishes from every report. So add the label here first, then use it. The list is the truth.

Worth knowing

The Categorize window will not let you type a label that is not on this tab; it offers the nearest one instead. That is how the list stays the truth.

Remember

Groups on the left, labels to the right, and only labels from this list on your rows. See you in the next one.
